Kalajoki beach, locally known as Hiekkasärkät (translates: sand dunes) is a natural coastline located near a small seaside town of Kalajoki. The beach is good for all watersports and carries the european blue flag for clean swimmingwater. The beach is on the Gulf of Bothnia which separates Finland from Sweden. A long stretch of the beach belongs to local camping site and various restaurants, nightclubs, swimmingpool, waterpark and private seaside cabins. The far northern end of the beach is closed during the nesting season to protect arctic terns and other locally nesting birds. Tall towers have been built for public use to accomodate birdwatching. 500 000 visitors flock to the beach each year to enjoy the clean soft sands and clean air and water. In the winter (late January - early April) the sea is frozen solid. People ski, fish, walk, skate and even drive cars on the ice. What is more beautiful than a bright blue sky and endless white frozen sea ahead of you.
