On the north side of Bayazit Square in Istanbul stands a large gate, the entrance to the University (Istanbul Ãœniversitesi; previously the War Ministry, Seras Kerat), on the site of the earliest palace of the Sultans. To the right of the University is the 60m/200ft high Bayazit Tower (Bayazit Kulesi, 1823), now a fire-watch tower; from the top (180 steps) there are superb views of Istanbul, finest atsunset or early in the morning (mostly closed).
