The field was named Shields – Watkins Field in 1921 after Col. W. S. Shields and his wife, Alice Watkins, who provided the money to purchase the property. The field had 3200 seats. The stadium that surrounds the field became known as Neyland Stadium. It was named after General Robert R. Neyland. Neyland was head football coach at Tennessee from 1926 to 1952. After retiring from coaching, he served as athletic director for ten years.
