Neyland Stadium is the home of University of Tennessee football. Neyland Stadium has housed over 22 million fans since the 1950 football season, when official attendance records began being kept. Neyland Stadium has become the pride of the University of Tennessee campus. It is the largest stadium in the South, and the second largest in the nation. After 79 years, and 16 expansion projects, Neyland stadium now has a total of 104,079 seats.
The field was named Shields – Watkins Field in 1921 after Col. W. S. Shields and his wife, Alice Watkins, who provided the money to purchase the property. The field had 3200 seats. The stadium that surrounds the field became known as Neyland Stadium. It was named after General Robert R. Neyland. Neyland was head football coach at Tennessee from 1926 to 1952. After retiring from coaching, he served as athletic director for ten years.
